Do you remember when we met?
We talked about the same goal,
Trying to get others see that we were worthy,
Not realizing that we were the captains of our own souls.
We made the cut and for a short time you oriented the line,
But then switched with the Show because you could not tell time.
But the weeks zoomed by
And in the end forty-one became 1.
We completed one journey
And we thought now was the time to have fun.
Shortly thereafter I was out stepping in the bayou
Before returning to the Home by the Sea.
We spent part of the next year bonding
Before you went to serve your country.
For a second time you carried a Shield
While you trekked through a Desert Storm.
You came back as you left us, a hero,
But we also realized that you were reborn.
When someone is born again
They cannot do what they use to do.
Maybe that is what you were struggling with back in ’92.
During the time of Thanksgiving
The Supreme blew His breath,
Extinguishing a once bright light
That sent you to your death.
To a mother you were a Gentleman that fulfilled her dreams,
To the few and the proud you were a Dog of freedom,
A tried and true Marine.
For one young lady you were her mate that you shared a love faithfully.
But to those with style, soul, grace and expression, your Friends,
You will always be Sweet D.
